A day in the life:
Medtronic Diabetes is seeking an experienced Senior Principal Legal Counsel - Procurement to join our Legal team, focusing on procurement and supply chain matters, with an emphasis on indirect procurement contracts (e.g., professional services, IT and SAAS agreements) and direct procurement contracts. The role involves providing expert legal counsel, drafting and negotiating complex contracts, and managing risks to support Medtronic Diabetes' global procurement operations. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong negotiation skills, deep expertise in contract law, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
This position is an exciting opportunity to work with Medtronic's Diabetes business. Medtronic has announced its intention to separate the Diabetes division to promote future growth and innovation within the business and reallocate investments and resources across Medtronic, subject to applicable information and consultation requirements. This separation provides our team with a bold opportunity to unleash our potential, enabling us to operate with greater speed and agility. This position reports to the Assistant General Counsel, Operations.
This role requires you to work on-site at our Northridge, CA office at least 3 days per week. This on-site presence is vital for collaboration and maintaining strong team connections. Please be aware that the hybrid schedule may change based on business needs, potentially requiring additional on-site days.
While our preference is for candidates based in the Los Angeles area, exceptional remote candidates within the US may also be considered.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$190,400.00 - $285,600.00
- Analyze, draft, and negotiate broad range of indirect procurement agreements including software licenses, cloud service agreements, managed IT services, professional services contracts, consulting agreements, temporary staffing agreements
- Analyze, draft, and negotiate broad range of direct procurement agreements including complex product development, supply chain, distribution, and contract manufacturing agreements with third parties.
- Advise and counsel business clients on a variety of business transactions and operational matters by providing clear, practical, and timely advice on matters such as risk mitigation, relevant laws, and emerging trends.
- Support dispute resolution with third parties by utilizing negotiation skills, settlements, and legal expertise.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders on the recommended structure of agreements.
- Partner with subject matter experts across a global organization, including coordination with Privacy, Security, Regulatory, Quality, Federal Contracts and Trade Compliance.
- Work collaboratively with other lawyers, paralegals and administrative staff to provide the legal support for the areas described above.
- Collaborate with a team to update template agreements, draft playbooks, and provide training to support a consistent contracting standards and process
- Participate in other projects as assigned or as needed.
- JD from a nationally recognized law school.
- Licensed to practice in at least one US state or the District of Columbia.
- 8+ years of experience drafting and negotiating contracts as a practicing attorney with demonstrated ability and experience with complex commercial transactions
Nice to Have:
- Strong knowledge of contract law and compliance requirements, including data privacy and intellectual property considerations
- Deep expertise in drafting, negotiating, and managing complex procurement contracts, with a focus on indirect spend categories
- Familiarity with FDA regulations, healthcare compliance, or other medical device industry-specific legal frameworks
- Familiarity with contract lifecycle management systems, including Onit
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and thrive in a fast-paced, global environment.
- Proven ability to manage high-stakes negotiations and resolve complex legal issues with vendors and stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a proactive approach to risk management.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to establish credibility, to build relationships with internal teams and external partners.

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
