The Role:
We're looking for a driven and talented individual to join our growing team at An Australian Software Company in a fully remote Senior Patent Counsel role focusing on running all aspects of the patent program at An Australian Software Company . As Senior Patent Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in developing and executing our patent strategy. You'll work closely with engineering, product, and leadership teams to identify protectable innovations, manage outside counsel, and build a world-class portfolio aligned with our business goals. What you will do as Senior Patent Counsel:
  • Invention Harvesting: Collaborate with engineering and product teams to identify patentable innovations through regular invention disclosure sessions and technical reviews.
  • Patent committee: Run weekly patent committee meetings - provide enabement materials and guide conversations on filing decisions.
  • Outside Counsel Management: Manage external patent counsel and ensure timely filings, quality, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Budget Management: Forecast budgets for each quarter. Review incoming bills.
  • Incentive Management: work with our Senior IP paralegal to manage inventor incentives.
  • Inventor events and trainings: Hold inventor appreciation and training events at our various offices throughout the globe.
  • Metrics: Work with our law firms and paralegal to maintain quarterly dashboards and IP filing reports to management.
  • General IP Counseling: Contribute and collaborate with team members as needed for various IP issues in litigation, product counseling, and general IP compliance.

More About You:
  • J.D. and admission to practice before the USPTO.
  • 5+ years of law firm patent prosecution experience law experience.
  • 2+ years of in-house experience at a tech company.
  • You are located in the U.S. Pacific timezone.
  • Strong technical background (CS degree preferred).
  • You have a background in supporting IP litigation. Not required but a plus if you have some experience in patent litigation/patent office litigation.
  • Demonstrated success in building and managing patent portfolios at scale.
  • Exceptional communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience working with agile product teams in a fast-paced SaaS environment.
  • Ability to learn new processes, systems, and team culture.
  • Willingness to take on projects are they come up and learn new systems/processes.
  • You take ownership, roll up your sleeves, and get things done with directional guidance.
  • You have the confidence to independently manage complex projects and the drive to build new functionality.
  • You can navigate a complex organization and work with ambiguity.
