Summary:
To perform highly complex patent, exclusivity, and related activities independently. To advise and act as a strategic partner with the senior leaders within the business with respect to patent and related activities, and to drive business solutions linked to expertise. To utilize high level expertise on a number of topics, both for assigned portfolios and across portfolios, georgraphies, or therapeutic areas. To lead and mentor other individual Patent colleagues and to be an active member of the applicable IP team. To contribute to the development of operational and strategic objectives within the applicable IP team, and to manage complex projects and initiatives across IP including functional management of team members.

A Swiss Multinational Pharmaceutical Company Based in Basel, Switzerland Biomedical Research is seeking a Senior Patent Attorney. To perform, manage, direct, and leverage designated patent and related intellectual property (IP) activities within the research and development (R&D) organization of A Swiss Multinational Pharmaceutical Company Based in Basel, Switzerland

Location: This role will be based out of the Cambridge, MA office and follow a hybrid working model.

Major Accountabilities:
  • Undertakes and leads core and complex patent activities in role; e.g. patent drafting and prosecution, patentability and freedom to operate analysis, IP due diligences, litigation, contract IP terms.
  • Manages a patent portfolio and may manage others relating to a key product, multiple products or other strategic assets.
  • Applies deep expertise in national patent law and practice, foreign patent law and practice and other forms of protection relating to exclusivity, and makes strategic use of it.
  • Coordinates and provides specialist knowledge on one or more specific IP matters or policies to own organization or across IP and A Swiss Multinational Pharmaceutical Company Based in Basel, Switzerland.
  • Manages patent or other exclusivity litigation with high independence according to the agreed process.
  • Is a strategic partner to the business, and creates and supports implementation of IP strategies to support the business.
  • Understands the business of A Swiss Multinational Pharmaceutical Company Based in Basel, Switzerland as part of the healthcare industry, and the role of IP in that business.
  • Builds relationships with, and counsels, senior Business Partners on complex and high value/impact IP-related matters, and represents IP on respective boards/meetings providing critical IP perspective.
  • Contributes to management of budget through careful planning, management of external counsels, and applying cost containment strategies.
  • Contributes to, and leads, development and implementation of IP policies, guidelines and objectives.
  • Reporting of technical complaints / adverse events / special case scenarios related to A Swiss Multinational Pharmaceutical Company Based in Basel, Switzerland products within 24 hours of receipt -Distribution of marketing samples (where applicable)

Essential Requirements:
  • J.D. degree with admission to at least one state bar & registered to practice before US Patent Office required
  • AND:
  • Bachelor degree in chemistry or equivalent; MS/ PhD, or equivalent, in organic chemistry or pharmaceutical science is preferred
  • PLUS
  • 3-7+ years exposure to the drug discovery and development processes utilized at pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology companies preferred
  • 12+ years' experience as a patent practitioner in a law firm or in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry is required
  • Expertise in local (US) and PCT law, filing process and prosecution practice; detailed understanding of counterpart European patent law and other major global patent systems is required
  • Strong organization and time management skills with flexibility, creativity, resourcefulness to successfully prioritize and manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously is required
  • Strong customer-service experience & focus to build and sustain effective partnerships with key stakeholders and project teams is required
  • Well-developed research and critical thinking skills, and sound decision-making abilities, with attention to detail to produce consistently accurate work is required

Desirable Requirements:
  • Strong scientific background in chemical sciences, in particular organic or pharmaceutical chemistry; preferably including direct lab experience is preferred
  • Experience integrating global outlook and management of product lifecycle into decision-making process is preferred
