About This Position:
This Senior Managing Counsel EX7 position is responsible for managing the PL & General Litigation Department in American Honda's Law & IP Unit. This position oversees a team of attorneys, paralegals and administrative staff who are tasked with handling and developing a portfolio of moderate and high-risk product liability matters, lemon law litigation, asbestos lawsuits, and other general liability matters. The Senior Managing Counsel EX7 position requires strong risk assessment capabilities to analyse such things as proper case development, key counsel, experts, and court jurisdictions. The individual will report to the Associate General Counsel for Litigation and provide assessments and advice to other AHM senior management. Senior management relies on the associate for thoughtful and well-reasoned recommendations regarding the strategy, settlement, and handling of higher risk matters. These litigation matters can carry a risk of more than $10M dollars.

Responsibilities include:
Litigation: Develop and implement an overall defense strategy for litigating PL, warranty, asbestos, and general litigation matters to reach the best long-term solutions for Honda. Manage a team of attorneys, paralegals and administrative staff who are tasked with defending the company in those types of claims and lawsuits. Ensure the staff attorneys and outside counsel are developing the defense of the cases appropriately and efficiently. Provide the business with regular updates and advice.

Legal advice and services: Provide high quality legal services and advice in a timely and cost-effective manner, and execute legal activities, to enable the applicable Honda business units to meet legal obligations and reduce risk for moderate to more complex legal matters.

Knowledge management: Follow changes in all relevant federal and state laws and regulations, and exchange and share legal knowledge within the applicable Honda entity/unit/division/department, as well as train Honda associates in legal best practices, to improve the awareness, quality, and effectiveness of the legal function.

Projects: Participate in the planning and execution of assigned AHM Law & IP projects with a regional focus.

Who we are seeking:
Required Work Experience:
  • At least 20 years of experience as an attorney with at least 15 of those years handling litigation matters, preferably in high profile product litigation cases.
  • Must have good knowledge of the law area they support.

Required Education:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an Accredited Law School
  • Admittance to the California Bar

  • Competitive Base Salary: $202,400 to $303,500
