What you will do:
You will serve as a senior attorney handling complex tax and regulatory litigation, advising agency leadership, and providing subject-matter expertise on SC's sales tax matters. You will also support the growth of the Legal team by mentoring junior attorneys and contributing to legal projects across the agency.
Primary job duties include:
- Litigating tax and regulatory matters in State and Federal trial and appellate courts, with a focus on complex regulatory issues and sales tax cases
- Drafting Department Determinations, orders, and related pleadings for protested cases
- Serving as the agency's subject-matter expert on complex regulatory matters and litigation strategies
- Providing leadership, guidance, and professional mentorship to junior Litigation attorneys, including reviewing work product as necessary
- Advising the Chief Legal Counsel, agency divisions, and other governmental entities (including SLED) on legal procedures, interpretation of legislation, and other matters of law
- Position may require some travel/overnight travel as necessary.
Minimum and Additional Requirements:
- A Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and at least ten years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Must be a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar and have completed Rule 403 requirements
Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in business litigation, state and local tax law, administrative law practice, or an accounting background
- Extensive knowledge of the law of S.C. court rules and litigation procedures
