Reports to the Senior Legal Counsel, Downstream Operations North America. The predominant focus of this role is internal; however, there is regular interaction with external service providers and occasionally regulatory bodies.

What you will do:
  • Work with a team of attorneys, paralegals, and contracts professionals to provide timely, accurate, solutions focused and commercially oriented legal advice on a wide range of matters including complex commercial contracts relating to supply, distribution, purchase and sales contracts as well as advice relating to supply chain and operations issues including those related to transportation, distribution, logistics, storage, procurement and contracts management, real estate, finance, agronomy and sustainability.
  • Exercise sound business judgment.
  • Develop and maintain a range of relationships with an extensive network of colleagues and stakeholders both internally and externally, to facilitate cooperation and deliver positive outcomes to advance the goals of the legal team and the Nutrien businesses.
  • Identify and advise on legal, regulatory and compliance related risks.
  • Monitor and advise of changes to laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Business Unit, IT, HR, Operations, Procurement, and other functions to develop strategies for providing legal support, including identifying specific legal requirements relative to such teams' activities and advising on opportunities and legal risks to successfully facilitate their initiatives.
  • Support the development and delivery of training materials and other communications to increase employee understanding of the legal aspects of company policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Identify and facilitate adoption of process improvements and best practices within the Downstream Operations team, including through the creation and implementation of new technologies, templates, and playbooks.
  • Identify ways to mitigate and improve the management of key legal risks affecting the business and its interests.
  • Retain, supervise, and direct outside counsel effectively and efficiently manage legal expenses consistent with the overall legal budget.
  • Leverage technology to enable to the right people to do the right work in the right way.
  • Travel within North America and potentially abroad as necessary for occasional meetings and other work.
  • Be proactive and responsive to changing priorities and demands by applying judgement to prioritize work and effectively manage risk and client expectations in a high work volume legal office.
  • Other duties as directed from time to time.

What you will bring:
  • Membership of a Bar Association in the U.S. with the qualifications to become a member of the Colorado Bar Association.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Significant in-house counsel experience combined with law firm experience is preferred.
  • Experience advising agricultural businesses is also preferred.
  • Ability to hit the ground running and already possess a well-developed set of skills and ability to work independently, collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset towards the legal function and the business at large.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, and be commercially astute.
  • Consummate team player and collaborator.
  • Demonstrated ability to create relationships across all levels of an organization.
  • Broad substantive legal background, and experience in antitrust would be an asset.
  • Ability to effectively manage tight timelines and balance competing priorities.
  • Business, tax or financial acumen would be an asset.
  • Experience of being a highly effective, practical lawyer focused on value creation.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder influencing skills to achieve strategic business objectives both with internal Legal Partners, internal and external stakeholders.
