The New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers (NJ CAR), founded in 1918, is a non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of the 500+ franchised car and truck retailers throughout New Jersey. The Coalition promotes public policies that ensure a fair and competitive marketplace and keeps its members informed on a variety of business matters, practices, trends, and legislation.

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Legal & Compliance Advisor to join our team. The successful candidate will serve as a key legal advisor to our dealer members, providing expert guidance on a wide array of legal and compliance matters critical to the operation of new car and truck dealerships. This role requires a proactive professional who can offer immediate, practical advice while also managing complex legal projects and contributing to the organization's strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide timely legal and compliance assistance to dealer members via phone and email on topics including franchise law, taxation, motor vehicle regulations, employment law, advertising standards, and environmental, health, and safety guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the General Counsel/Chief of Staff to manage complex legal matters, including referring cases to and working with outside counsel.
  • Draft legal memoranda and assist in the preparation of pleadings, motions, and amicus briefs for legal challenges relevant to the industry.
  • Review, draft, and approve contracts and agreements with external vendors and business partners.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of compliant internal workplace policies.
  • Develop and conduct online and in-person training seminars for members on pertinent legal and compliance topics.
  • Produce regular legal updates and publications for the membership to highlight new regulations and offer ongoing business management advice.
  • Network with legal professionals and associations within the automotive industry to stay informed of the evolving legal and compliance landscape.
  • Work closely with senior leadership and other departments on various projects, including licensing issues with state commissions.

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Bar in the State of New Jersey and in good standing.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of legal experience with franchise law, employment/labor law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
