Summary:
Lidl US is searching for the next Senior In-House Counsel to join our Legal & Compliance team! The Senior In-House Counsel is a highly autonomous, intuitive self-starter who requires minimal direction to drive results. This role drives the organization, implementation, and leadership of the Legal Department, including proactively detecting, identifying, and mitigating legal risk. Grounded in either law firm or corporate environments, the successful candidate brings a broad, versatile variety of transactional experience allowing for a seamless jump into a diverse array of complex matters with limited supervision, while ensuring business compliance with Lidl International requirements.

What You'll Do:
Essential Functions:
  • Supervise, mentor, and manage multiple team members/managers in accordance with Company principles and management model
  • Oversee the development, operation, and execution of assigned programs and initiatives in collaboration with cross department stakeholders
  • Design process improvement mechanisms including automation of existing processes/tools to ensure standardization and consistency
  • Autonomous Project & Transaction Delivery: Instantly adapt and jump into a wide variety of new, complex projects and diverse transactional matters with limited oversight, managing them effectively from conception to completion
  • Strict Timeline Management: Maintain flawless adherence to strict internal and external deadlines and timelines
  • Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and manage team members/managers in accordance with Company principles and management models
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Independently oversee the development, operation, and execution of assigned programs and initiatives alongside cross-department stakeholders
  • Process Innovation:Intuitively design and implement process improvement mechanisms, including the automation of existing tools, to ensure corporate standardization and consistency
  • Corporate Representation: Represent the company authoritatively in legal affairs and directly communicate with courts, authorities, and external counsel
  • Contract Management: Oversee cross-divisional conception, coordination, and implementation of central contract management, developing contract standards and templates based on International guidelines
  • Reporting & Compliance: Monitor and analyze relevant legislation and applicable law while executing reporting obligations in accordance with Management specifications

  • Software Proficiency: Proficient in Google Workspace tools, Microsoft Office Suite, or related software

Required Education, Certifications/ Licenses, Related Experience
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited US law school
  • Member in Good Standing of at least 1 state bar required (Virginia preferred); must be able to present a certificate of Good Standing from State Bar; and must obtain admission to Virginia Bar within a reasonable timeframe
  • Experience reading and interpreting regulations, laws, and statutes
  • Significant experience with and ability to perform trademark and trade dress clearance within tight, fast-paced constraints
  • Experience creating and delivering high-impact trainings for varying levels of internal stakeholders

Preferred Education, Certifications/ Licenses, Related Experience
  • Commercial retail and/or grocery retail legal experience strongly preferred
  • Commercial Real Estate and Construction basic understanding strongly preferred
  • Commercial Contract drafting and negotiation lead and/or management strongly preferred
  • Artificial Intelligence and Marketing experience preferred

Physical Job Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
