Your role at An American Global Manufacturer & Marketer of Consumer and Professional Products Company:
Reporting to the Senior Director – Litigation, Labor & Employment, Compliance, this position serves as a strategic legal advisor on labor and employment matters across the An American Global Manufacturer & Marketer of Consumer and Professional Products Company family of brands. Partnering closely with People&, Business Unit and Supply Chain leaders, and center of cxcellence subject matter experts, this role requires high levels of business acumen and legal guidance. This role also supports An American Global Manufacturer & Marketer of Consumer and Professional Products Company Employee Benefits team on various benefit programs including, leave, accommodation, total compensation, compliance, and administration of retirement and health benefit plans (ERISA). This role will be both an individual contributor and a collaborator with other An American Global Manufacturer & Marketer of Consumer and Professional Products Company legal team members who oversee litigation, unfair competition, regulatory, compliance, privacy, commercial contracts/procurement, technology, and insurance/risk.

This position can be based in Oakland, CA or Alpharetta, GA, and the individual will be expected to be in the office 3 days a week. Relocation assistance will be offered.

In this role, you will:
  • Overseeing investigations and preparation of responses to administrative charges and/or complaints filed with the DOL, EEOC, and various state and local civil rights agencies, including the supervision and management of outside counsel, as necessary
  • Providing ongoing leadership on labor relations and An American Global Manufacturer & Marketer of Consumer and Professional Products Company ongoing Positive Employee Relations workstreams
  • Assisting in developing, reviewing, and revising employee policies and procedures
  • Developing and delivering training programs on compliance with laws, best practices, and internal policies independently and/or in collaboration with other subject matter experts
  • Advising on sensitive personnel matters, including background checks, onboarding, training, leaves of absence, discipline, terminations, performance management, investigations, and other related topics
  • Advising on FLSA requirements, wage and hour related questions, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements and Company policies
  • Assisting with employment related projects, including organizational transformation and change management, internal processes reviews, new policy creation and implementation, training programs, etc.
  • Managing pre-litigation and litigation matters regarding employment, labor, and employee benefits
  • Ensuring that ERISA Benefits plans have appropriate documentation and assisting with preparation of plan documents and amendments
  • Reviewing and assisting with preparation of Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) and Summaries of Material Modification (SMMs)
  • Drafting and refining leave and accommodation processes and overseeing rollout and consistent implementation
  • Reviewing and negotiating service provider agreements
  • Assisting with ERISA Benefits issues, including those related to corporate acquisitions
  • Monitoring new and changing employment related laws and regulations and recommending necessary adjustments to Company policies and practices
  • Overseeing the administration of required and Company-elected training courses on subjects ranging from positive employee relations, sexual harassment prevention, bystander awareness, HIPAA, and workplace safety
  • Partnering with business unit or center of excellence teams on various confidential projects with labor and employment implications to ensure compliance with all legal obligations and issue spot for areas of other legal concern
  • Partnering with business leaders across the enterprise to ensure legal compliance
  • Assisting in other substantive legal areas or special projects as needed or assigned
  • Working with members of Legal leadership, other attorneys, and staff on departmental matters
  • Managing outside counsel
  • Exhibiting strategic thinking and creative problem solving
  • Familiarity with technology driven employment law solutions and data analytics
  • Ability to tailor legal guidance to various audiences

What we look for:
  • 7+ years as a practicing attorney; experience in a top-tier law firm (in-house experience a plus)
  • Knowledge of specialized legal areas, including employment, litigation, unionized labor, labor awareness, investigations and compliance, wage and hour, ERISA, Employee Benefits
  • Demonstrated success at providing strategic counseling to business partners that balances legal risks alongside business goals
  • Broad range of relevant legal experience, and the ability to identify, prioritize and resolve critical legal issues in real time
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to drive, lead, provide points of view and listen while working with legal and technical staff
  • Strong negotiation, consultative and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all internal and external stakeholders
  • Self-starter with a sense of urgency, ability to multi-task, ability to prioritize matters and to handle unanticipated situations effectively and work well under pressure with tight deadlines to ensure timely and appropriate responses to issues raised
  • Excellent written and oral communication

Key Qualifications:
  • JD degree
  • Member of the California State Bar (or eligible to register under the California State Bar in-house counsel program) or Georgia State Bar, depending on the work location.
  • Ability to work in person from one of the company's offices mentioned above.
  • Ability to travel as needed for business (less than 20%)
