GEICO is seeking a Senior Director, Associate General Counsel to lead its commercial contracting function. This role reports to the leader of the Legal Operations and Commercial Law Division and serves as a strategic partner to business, product, technology, and procurement leadership. The Senior Director will oversee a large, high-performing team of attorneys and contracting professionals supporting enterprise-wide transactions, while shaping contracting strategy, enabling complex deals, and advancing a modern, scalable legal operating model. This role will also play a key part in advancing ongoing contract lifecycle management (CLM) implementation and refining a contracting framework that has already undergone significant transformation.

Location:
This is a hybrid role, on-site 3 days per week at our Bethesda, MD or Manhattan, NY office location.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead, develop, and retain a large team (approximately 16) of attorneys and contract professionals, including oversight of senior team members and managers
  • Set the vision and operating model for the commercial contracting function, including prioritization, resourcing, and performance expectations
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for complex, high-impact transactions and negotiations
  • Provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance that enables innovation while appropriately managing risk
  • Partner with senior leaders across product, technology, procurement, and business teams to support strategic initiatives
  • Drive continuous improvement of contracting processes, tools, and policies, including adoption of AI, automation, contract lifecycle management (CLM) capabilities, and data-driven performance metrics
  • Partner with legal operations to advance CLM implementation and optimization, refining workflows, governance, and user experience aligned with an established operating model
  • Build upon an established, high-functioning contracting framework by introducing thoughtful, incremental improvements
  • Contribute to the evolution of future-state contracting processes using data, stakeholder feedback, and practical experience
  • Establish and track KPIs such as cycle time, throughput, and risk outcomes to improve efficiency and transparency
  • Oversee a wide range of commercial agreements including technology, SaaS, marketing, HR, claims, data, and professional services agreements

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • 12–15+ years of experience advising on complex commercial and technology transactions
  • 7+ years of leadership experience, including managing teams of attorneys or contract professionals; experience leading managers and senior counsel preferred
  • Proven ability to operate as a strategic partner to senior business stakeholders
  • Extensive experience negotiating high-value commercial agreements, particularly in technology and services
  • Experience supporting or implementing CLM tools and driving adoption and change management
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance mature processes through thoughtful, incremental improvements
  • Strong judgment, prioritization, and ability to translate complex legal issues into practical guidance

Annual Salary
$210,000.00 - $350,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
