Short DescriptionSenior Counsel is a motivated individual who believes in A Teaching Hospital's mission to serve, to heal, and to educate to improve the lives of A Teaching Hospital patients and the communities it serves.
At the direction of General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, Senior Counsel shall provide legal services to the Health System on a broad range of matters including, without limitation, health law and regulations, corporate governance, real estate, family law, insurance, clinical research and human subject protection, employment law, and other business-related matters. This position shall monitor and interpret complex healthcare laws to support business decision-making; create and update corporate policies and procedures; develop and implement education programs; and offer legal advice on various healthcare matters to A Teaching Hospital management.
This is an advanced position which must work independently and collaborate with other professionals and departments. Senior Counsel must be able to lead projects with minimal oversight.
Senior Counsel must possess excellent legal research and writing skills in addition to having the desire, disposition, and integrity necessary to work well with fellow members of A Teaching Hospital's legal department, members of A Teaching Hospital's healthcare and administrative departments, outside and opposing counsel, and court personnel. Senior Counsel must project a positive attitude and foster a team approach with his or her colleagues.
Experience Required:
A demonstrated ability to systematically:
- Research a variety of statutes, regulations, case law and other legal authorities.
- Professionally and thoroughly investigate various types of factual situations.
- Apply relevant legal authorities to a given factual situation.
- Develop sound and practical legal conclusions about a client's obligations or opportunities in a given factual situation.
- Present those conclusions to other attorneys and client representatives in an organized, systematic and professional manner. A demonstrated ability and desire to work in a team
- Oriented collaborative environment A demonstrated proficiency in modern legal office skills, including the use of Microsoft 365, the Internet, and Westlaw.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree and Juris Doctor required.
License/Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid NJ driver's license. Active bar admission in good standing and eligible for New Jersey licensure (unrestricted license preferred). Admission to the New Jersey Bar required within one year of employment.
