Department Overview:
We are seeking a candidate with expertise in U.S. law related to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on U.S. privacy law in the financial services industry. This role includes assessing and advising on laws, rules, regulations, and policies related to data management and security, infrastructure and software development capabilities, and the use of advanced analytics and AI. Experience with cybersecurity law is a plus.
It also includes providing timely and sound counsel to TD's US Data and Analytics team and the US Privacy Office, among others. The ideal candidate would have a background in collaborating with and advising cross-functional teams (e.g., Privacy Office, Product Legal, Marketing, Data, Regulatory, and Platforms and Technology) and a solid understanding of AI, privacy and cybersecurity risks. Additionally, you should be able to provide legal input/representation on incident response, privacy impact assessments, and agreements involving privacy provisions.

Depth & Scope:
- May manage paralegal and administrative staff, assigning responsibilities and evaluating results
- Provides leadership, coaching, counseling and guidance to staff
- Supervises external counsel providing advice or other legal services of the Company
- Works closely with General Counsel, department attorneys and external legal counsel on specific legal issues related to the Company's business
- Gives practical support and assistance to contemporaries, junior attorneys and staff
- Volunteers expert advice and experience
- Verifies the information has been understood
- Serves in one or more permanent or ad hoc practice groups or cross-practice teams of attorneys and staff
- Assists in the management of expenditures for external counsel
- Advises lines of business on best practices that help minimize legal and litigation risk
- May assist General Counsel in developing and managing departmental budget for both internal and external legal spend

Education & Experience:
- Bachelors degree required
- J.D. from an Accredited Law School required
- 10+ Years of related experience
- Strong knowledge of at least one area of law relating to banking/financial services operations and issues

Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge about the emerging capabilities of AI, Machine Learning (ML), Large Language Models (LLMs), and related technology
- Experience partnering with technical teams and providing practical, risk-based advice
- Interest and/or experience in assessing and advising on AI legal, regulatory and related developments (e.g., the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and state AI and automated decision-making technology laws)
- Sharp issue-spotting and ability to effectively assess and manage complex legal issues
- Strong background in compliance, audit, and other detail-oriented legal programs
- Ability to rapidly digest, analyze, and propose solutions for dynamic problems
- Knowledge of privacy and data protection risks with AI systems and uses
- In-house experience at an AI, technology, FINTECH, or financial services company
- IAPP CIPP/U and AIGP certifications are a plus
