This position provides legal advice to H&R Block, Inc. and its subsidiaries on a variety of complex legal issues, including business operations and complex transactions in support of strategic imperatives.

Day to day, you'll...
  • Research, analyze and provide legal advice to business units on complex legal and compliance matters related to Company's operations, product and strategic initiatives, particularly in the area of small business services, including tax planning, bookkeeping, payroll, and advisory services.
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance regarding complex transactions involving sophisticated counterparties and external service providers, including professional services agreements, licenses, and other strategic sourcing agreements.
  • Assist with legal review and risk mitigation tactics regarding all aspects of client interactions, including disclosures and agreements, identity verification and authentication, marketing, and customer service.
  • Work closely with the VP-Legal (Financial Services, Small Business & Franchise), General Counsel, and other senior executives to provide high level legal support on a variety of initiatives.
  • Monitor evolving laws that may impact the business and help design and implement compliant solutions.
  • Serve as a department subject matter expert on matters related to small business services, including tax planning, bookkeeping, payroll, advisory services, and commercial finance solutions.
  • Contribute to team efforts by timely meeting commitments and working collaboratively with minimal supervision.
  • Periodically assist with diverse high demand legal projects outside normal area of focus.
  • Manage outside counsel within budget.
  • Some domestic or international travel may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll bring to the team...
  • Juris Doctorate degree plus license to practice law in one or more states
  • A current member of the Missouri Bar or an ability to become a member of the Missouri Bar within six months
  • At least ten years of legal experience at a large law firm, corporate legal department, or similar
  • Detail-oriented focus, with demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with an ability to communicate and persuade a wide range of audiences
  • Proven ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with clients and external partners, delivering thoughtful, customer-focused legal guidance that supports business objectives.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects and work initiatives at the same time
  • Strong business acumen and an eagerness to partner with internal business colleagues to solve business issues
  • A positive attitude, a collegial approach, and an instinct to go “above and beyond” in order to achieve the optimal outcome for the Company
