An American Auto Insurance Company is seeking an experienced employment lawyer to join its in-house Legal department. The Senior Corporate Counsel, Employment Law will partner cross-functionally across geographies and be primarily responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to ensure employment law compliance at the federal and state level. This role will partner closely with human resources, safety and security, and other business teams, while forming part of a collaborative legal department that is valued for its practical advice. The ideal candidate will have at least 8 years' relevant substantive experience in a law firm or large in-house legal department. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong judgment, a broad range of employment law experience, and an eagerness to be involved in a dynamic company.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a broad range of employment law matters including, but not limited to, the hiring process, background checks, compensation, wage & hour, employee relations, discipline and termination, diversity and inclusion, accommodations, and leaves of absence.
  • Draft, review, and revise agreements, policies, practices, and processes as it relates to human resources and Code of Conduct matters, and partner with relevant stakeholders to support implementation.
  • Defend the company against agency charges and investigations related to employment matters.
  • Facilitate the escalation of complex matters to outside counsel while maintaining control over case management and expenses.
  • Conduct research as needed to provide relevant advice.
  • Proactively monitor legislation, regulations, and emerging trends in labor and employment law.
  • Support and occasionally conduct employee relations investigations.
  • Advise senior executives to influence decision making.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • At least 6 years of experience practicing law including at least 4 years of focused employment law experience.
  • Deep understanding and experience across the U.S. federal and state employment law landscape, including but not limited to the ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FSLA, and Title VII.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Ability to balance legal risk and business objectives.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience at a leading law firm and/or large in-house legal department.
  • Ability to effectively counsel internal clients by providing clear, concise and pragmatic advice.
  • Ability to operate autonomously or work collaboratively with other members of the Legal Department.
  • Vested time and longevity in majority or all of current and previous positions held.
