Minnesota Lawyers Mutual (MLM) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Senior Claim Attorney to join our team. The Senior Claim Attorney is responsible for the independent investigation, evaluation, and resolution of complex professional liability claims, including legal malpractice and other errors and omissions matters. This role requires sound legal judgment, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to manage a caseload of high-exposure and complex claims with minimal oversight, while serving as a technical resource and mentor to less experienced claim staff.

Location:
Minneapolis, MN preferred but will consider other locations where MLM writes business for the right candidate. Hybrid schedule based on location and team needs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide excellent customer service to policyholders while investigating and analyzing coverage, liability and damages presented by claims
Independently investigate, evaluate, and manage a caseload of complex professional liability claims, including legal malpractice and other errors and omissions exposures, from initial notice through resolution

Assess coverage, liability, and damages by analyzing policy language, underlying case facts, applicable law, and relevant precedent
Set and adjust case reserves in accordance with company reserving philosophy and authority levels
Deelop and execute claim resolution strategies, including negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation management
Select, direct, and manage defense counsel and other outside vendors, including review and approval of litigation budgets and invoices
Conduct or oversee settlement negotiations directly with claimants, policyholders, and opposing counsel
Prepare clear, well-supported claim file documentation, coverage position letters, and reserve rationale
Present complex or high-exposure claims to management and/or claim committees, including recommendations on reserves, settlement authority, and litigation strategy
Identify and escalate claims involving coverage disputes, bad faith exposure, or reinsurance reporting thresholds
Monitor legal, regulatory, and industry developments affecting professional liability exposures and incorporate them into claim handling practices
Ensure claim handling complies with applicable state statutes, unfair claims practices acts, and internal claim handling guidelines across multiple jurisdictions
Serve as a technical resource and mentor to claim attorneys, adjusters, and other claim staff on complex coverage and liability issues
Collaborate with underwriting, risk management, and actuarial teams to share claim trends and inform pricing and policy form decisions
Participate in special projects, audits, and process improvement initiatives as assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and Juris Doctorate degree
Ten or more years of professional liability claims handling and/or litigation experience
Licensed and in good standing to practice law
Strong communication, writing and analytical skills with the ability to clearly articulate coverage determinations
Knowledge of insurance policies, procedures and regulations
Advanced negotiation and mediation skills
Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Competitive Base salary with a range from $94,300 - $141,500 depending on the breadth of experience, knowledge and scope of position for which they are hired
