Senior Bar Counsel – Ethics and Advertising

Help guide the ethical practice of law in Florida.

As a Senior Bar Counsel in Ethics & Advertising, you will provide guidance to Bar members on ethics issues and review attorney advertising for compliance with the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar. You will also conduct legal research, prepare written opinions, and work closely with Bar committees on matters involving professional ethics and attorney advertising.

What you will do:

• Provide oral ethics opinions to Florida Bar members through the Ethics Hotline and provide general guidance regarding the Rules of Professional Conduct
• Review attorney advertisements for compliance with the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar
• Respond to advertising questions and prepare written advertising opinions
• Staff the Standing Committee on Advertising, prepare agenda items, attend meetings and conference calls, and review minutes
• Conduct legal research on advertising issues and assist with drafting amendments to lawyer advertising rules
• Provide informal written ethics opinions to Bar members by mail and email
• Conduct legal research on ethics issues and draft formal and informal ethics opinions
• Staff the Professional Ethics Committee and its subcommittees, attend meetings, and review minutes
• Coordinate the annual Masters Seminar on Ethics
• Provide grievance case support by reviewing files, conducting research, and advising disciplinary counsel
• Maintain professional education and training and write Bar News articles on ethics and advertising topics
• Perform other duties as assigned

Who Should Apply:

• Juris Doctor and a member in good standing of The Florida Bar
• Senior Bar Counsel – Three or more years of legal experience as an attorney
• Bar Counsel – At least one year of legal experience as an attorney
• Knowledge of the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar, the rulemaking process, and Supreme Court guidelines
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, with close attention to grammar, style, and detail
• Strong legal research skills
• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
• Ability to organize work, set priorities, and exercise discretion and independent judgment
• Ability to build effective working relationships with committee leaders, practitioners, members of the judiciary, and a diverse group of colleagues

The position requires travel to Florida Bar and committee meetings, extended computer and telephone work, and the ability to lift 5 to 10 lbs.
