Summary:
Provides legal advice/counsel to all A Government Entity's business and functional areas. Researches, analyzes, and interprets proposed and existing laws, statutes, and regulations. Identifies, monitors, and addresses issues of legal risk. Informs and contributes to the structuring, drafting, negotiating and/or approval of legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies and other documents. May represent A Government Entity during litigation, arbitration, mediation or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities. Specialties may include but are not limited to Contract Management, Employment Law, Governmental/Regulatory Affairs and Litigation. #LI-CJ1

Responsibilities:
  • Under the general direction of an Assistant General Counsel, work directly with senior management to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of A Government Entity's and its subsidiaries' business operations to provide relevant legal advice, research and support
  • Research recent changes in law, rules and regulations related to A Government Entity's and its subsidiaries' business activities, and draft relevant memoranda and/or update governance or transactional documents accordingly
  • Conduct legal research, analyze and draft legal opinions and briefs
  • Attend meetings with senior management, with or without senor level attorneys, and provide support and counsel relative to key legal issues to support the business units
  • Handle cases and informal disputes on behalf of A Government Entity and its subsidiaries with supervisory oversight in judicial or other administrative forums
  • Interact with clients to develop and implement strategies that further A Government Entity's and its subsidiaries programs and related business activities
  • Serve on committees and/or task forces and report to Assistant General Counsel on progress and developments as legal issues arise
  • Report on major developments to supervisory senior attorneys and/or an Assistant General Counsel

Education, Experience and Certifications:
  • Juris Doctor Degree, admission to the New York State Bar and admitted to practice in New York State and Federal courts is required
  • Minimum 5 years of legal experience
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: of law relevant to A Government Entity, such as energy, regulatory, litigation, commercial and finance, and employment
  • Experience in utility industry preferred

Physical Requirements:
Up to 25% travel primarily within NY State
