Job Description- Department: Office of the Attorney General – Natural Resource Unit

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide complex legal work and representation for the Navajo Nation Government before federal, state, and Navajo Nation courts and administrative tribunals.
- Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents for a litigation-centered unit.
- Participate in settlement negotiations and case strategy development.
- Review proposed disciplinary actions for compliance with Navajo Nation legislation, regulations, and policies, including labor and employment matters.
- Confer with and take direction from the Assistant Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, and other leadership.
- Perform additional legal duties as assigned to support Department of Justice objectives.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (JD); and 4 years of professional experience as a state-licensed attorney. Current admission to any U.S. state bar Intent to seek admission to the Navajo Nation Bar Association and either the Arizona, New Mexico, or Utah State Bar within one (1) year of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of federal, state, and tribal laws, including federal Indian law
- Strong legal research methods and litigation skills
- Ability to analyze and organize complex facts, evidence, and case law
- Skill in preparing and presenting legal opinions and arguments
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
