This is an intellectual property (IP) attorney role that will support global business units on the development and deployment of IP strategy and initiatives. The role generally includes patent procurement, contract generation, IP risk mitigation and legal counseling. Must engage with Senior Staff and other business leadership to identify IP opportunities and resolve issues or claims involving IP. Willing to engage with all aspects of the IP role (for patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets) and to dynamically balance among competing priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively partner with business stakeholders in the setting of business goals
  • Set IP strategy in furtherance of business goals
  • Oversee and execute patent generation; inclusive of driving strategy, engaging outside counsel, and managing the patent application process
  • Serve as Lead Counsel for specialized contracts with heightened IP requirements
  • Support Internal Commercial Counsel on complex IP aspects of their deals, such as licensing terms and data ownership
  • Guide Engineering and Technical teams on third party IP risks during product development
  • Provide legal counsel generally on IP related topics and provide subject matter expertise

Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily)
  • Registered with the US Patent Bar and in good standing as an attorney with at least one State bar (Essential)
  • 7+ years' experience with broad and in-depth leadership experience in an intellectual property organization (Essential)
  • Experience in directing and overseeing IP asset procurement and management; and some background in IP-related contract work (Essential)
  • Both in-house counsel and law firm work experience (Preferred)
  • Global patent experience (Preferred)
  • Experience in a scientific, hi-tech or industrial setting (Preferred)
  • Transportation industry experience (Preferred)
