Summary:Reporting to the Law School Dean, this professional oversees all aspects of Academic Affairs at the Law School by recommending faculty and adjunct teaching assignments; prepares the schedules of course offerings for the Fall, Spring and Summer terms; works with the faculty to receive and approve course syllabi; oversees the administration of exams and approval of all grades submitted by faculty; oversees all aspects of student academic programs and monitors students' academic progress, including the evaluation of students' records for academic supervision, probation, and dismissal; and administers the Honor Code.
Essential Duties:
Oversees the law school's curricular goals and academic programs by:
- Analyzing program needs and establishing priorities for the curriculum.
- Engaging in strategic and operational planning to evaluate options and initiate strategies for resolution of issues.
- Analyzing and implementing policies and procedures.
- Developing solutions to issues raised by faculty, staff and students using a comprehensive knowledge of Law School, University, and ABA policies and procedures.
- Setting the annual Academic Calendar for the Law School and preparing the course schedules and faculty teaching assignments for each semester I term for approval by the Dean.
- Identifying and interviewing new prospective adjuncts and making hiring recommendations to the Dean.
- Reviewing and approving all exams in advance of their administration for purposes of determining that the exams are sufficiently clear, complex, rigorous and error free.
- Reviewing and approving all grades in advance of posting .
- Serving as the Dean's number one point person, or second in command, on matters related to general operations, human resources, and finances and assisting in the leadership necessary to fulfill the mission and goals of the Law School.
- Standing in for the Dean at events such as Open House, Admitted Students Day, etc.
- Dealing effectively with sensitive and confidential issues.
- Keeping abreast of formal and informal ABA standards and constraints.
- Leading, guiding, directing, and evaluating the work of the other administrators to ensure that the various units of the Law School meets and exceed its goals.
- Meeting with administrators to discuss goals, challenges, new ideas for improvement and to coordinate inter-office responses and efforts.
- Supervising the Registrar and directing the work of the office.
- Reviewing students' academic standing after each semester to determine the need to have them placed on academic supervision, on probation, or dismissed.
- Preparing all dismissal and probation letters to students.
- Reviewing the transcripts of all prospective graduates for verification of their satisfaction of all degree requirements and authorizing the posting of the degree.
- Administers the Honor Code by:
- Receiving Honor Code complaints and conducting initial investigations in accordance with the Code.
- Ensuring that all Complaints are processed according to the rules in a timely fashion; notifying all accused students of the disposition of their cases and keeping official records.
- Responding to inquiries from Bar Authorities regarding information on Honor Code by students and graduates.
- Completing accreditation reports, statistics, and committee work for SACS, ABA, and AALS.
- Serving as the Law School's Administrator for the preparation and submission of the ABA' s Annual Questionnaire, Employment Questionnaire, and Bar Passage Questionnaire.
- Teach one course per semester, when and as needed, while maintaining regular full-time administrative duties.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- JD required.
- Five to eight years of appropriate administrative experience with a school of law.
- Ability to analyze program needs and implement regulations, policies and procedures in a wide variety of contexts.
- Ability to effectively articulate and advance organizational goals. Ability to produce substantial reports and make effective presentations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of programs and strategies that enhance academic programs and support the academic retention and success of students.
- Skilled in maintaining an open line of communication with practicing attorneys and judges to ensure that the Law School can hire adjuncts who are specialized in their areas of practice.
