New hires are typically brought into the organization between $131,770 - $177,890/annually, based on experience and education. Location & Schedule
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work 3 days/week at the Richard T. Castro Building at 1200 Federal Boulevard, Denver, CO. Employee parking at the building is free.

The Denver City Attorney's Office is seeking a Senior Assistant City Attorney to join the Employment Law Unit within the Human Services Section of the Department of Law. The Human Services Section of the City Attorney's Office is in-house counsel for Denver Human Services, a city agency who serves 1 in every 3 Denver residents. This is a unique opportunity to handle impactful, challenging, and high-visibility legal work on behalf of a major public agency with over 1,100 employees. In this role, you will provide full-performance legal counsel, represent Denver Human Services in federal, state, and administrative courts, and litigate complex employment, labor, civil rights and constitutional matters. You will be part of a small, highly collaborative team that works on meaningful cases affecting the lives of Denver residents. The work is varied, meaningful, and directly tied to public service.
We are especially interested in seasoned litigators with strong expertise in employment law and trial practice. You will join a mission-driven legal team that values integrity, public services, and supporting one another in delivering exceptional legal work for Denver's residents.
Specifically, as a Senior Assistant City Attorney, you will:
- Independently managing administrative hearings and complex federal and state litigation, including discovery, motion practice, trials, and appeals.
- Advising agency leaders and HR partners on employment law matters, drafting disciplinary letters, and preparing formal legal opinions.
- Negotiating settlements and drafting legal documents including memoranda, motions, briefs, ordinances, and resolutions.
- Leading or supporting appellate work and mentoring junior attorneys when needed.
- Serving as a trusted legal advisor on issues involving Title VII, ADA, FMLA, ADEA, CADA, FLSA, and constitutional claims.
What You'll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
- Experience as lead counsel in state or federal jury/bench trials.
- Substantial experience advising clients on employment law, including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, and CADA.
- Background in public sector, civil rights, or constitutional matters.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
- Experience handling appeals.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Education requirement: Doctor of Jurisprudence degree or Bachelor of Laws degree.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience as an attorney at law.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
- License/Certifications: Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire or a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire in accordance with C.R.C.P. 203.2, 203.3, 203.4 and 205.6.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
