Office of the Attorney General Commonwealth of Virginia Health Services Section seeks a Deputy University Counsel for Health Affairs/senior Assistant Attorney General University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia

The attorney, based on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Health Services Section and the University Counsel, and will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to the University. The University of Virginia is comprised of eleven schools in Charlottesville, an academic medical center, plus the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia.

Duties: It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving the Health System at the University, including its Medical Center, Clinics, School of Medicine, Health Sciences Library, School of Nursing, and subsidiaries in coordination with the other attorneys in the Office of the University Counsel. Areas of emphasis may include current health law and regulatory requirements impacting an academic medical center, including but not limited to facility and individual health care provider licensure, risk management, third party reimbursement, patient privacy laws, health information technology, bioethical issues, health care transactional matters and services agreements, Medicare and Medicaid compliance, institutional review board matters involving human subject research, credentialing and privileging of providers, and employment of faculty members, advance practice providers and staff in the teaching hospital environment. The attorney will supervise and manage the attorneys and staff assigned to the Health Affairs Unit, including coaching and training, assigning and reviewing work, and providing performance feedback. Additionally, the individual will provide other legal services to the University and the Commonwealth as directed by the University Counsel and the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualifications: Successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion. A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law is required. Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation of academic medical centers and higher education institutions. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. Must be admitted to the Virginia bar or eligible for immediate admission. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
