Description:The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking a Senior Assistant Attorney General (AAG) to join the Consumer Protection Division's Housing Unit. The Division includes approximately 23 enforcement AAGs working across the General Enforcement, Lending and Finance, Health, Opioids, and Registration Units. The Housing Unit currently has five AAGs, and the Senior AAG will serve as a key member of this team.
In this role, the Senior AAG will enforce the Consumer Protection Act and other consumer protection laws in complex, high-impact matters involving Maryland consumers' homes. Responsibilities include investigating, evaluating, and, when appropriate, initiating enforcement actions to address unfair, abusive, and deceptive practices affecting Marylanders' housing. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to improve the lives of consumers throughout the state.
This position requires strong litigation, negotiation, and legal research and writing skills. This position requires commitment to the missions of the OAG and Division. Occasional travel and work outside of normal business hours may be required.

Experience: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six (6) years of legal experience, which may include one or more judicial clerkship(s). The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral advocacy skills and will have demonstrated success working as part of a cooperative legal team to investigate and/or litigate cases. Experience in complex civil litigation (such as class action, mass tort, multidistrict, food and drug, or similar litigation) and administrative litigation is highly desirable. Experience handling legal matters at both the federal and state levels is preferred. Admission to the Maryland Bar (or the ability to waive in) is required.

Applicants should have a demonstrated record of meaningful pro bono engagement or a sincere interest in pro bono work as a professional obligation. Once hired, Assistant Attorneys General are expected to fulfill that commitment throughout their employment with the Office through active participation in OAG's Stephen H. Sachs Pro Bono Program or other qualified opportunities. The OAG supports attorneys in meeting the goal set by the Maryland Supreme Court, MD Atty Rules 19-306.1(b), by allowing up to 50 hours work-time to be used for approved pro bono activities.
