Description:
Carney Badley Spellman, PS, seeks an experienced civil litigator to join its appellate‑practice group. This position involves serving as embedded appellate counsel on complex matters, working closely with trial teams from pretrial through appeal, and leading appellate strategy throughout the life of a case. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, high‑performing team known for delivering exceptional advocacy in demanding matters.The ideal candidate brings outstanding analytical and writing skills, sound judgment, and the ability to lead and mentor other lawyers. A commitment to precise, strategic, and practical appellate advocacy is essential.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Admission to the Washington bar and in good standing
- Judicial clerkship experience, preferably with a state or federal appellate court
- Ten or more years of civil litigation experience
- Exceptional legal research, writing, and analytical skills (multiple writing samples required)
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage competing deadlines
- High level of initiative and independence
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, lawyers, and staff
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and delegate work to team members
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft clear, persuasive briefs and motions
- Handle appeals from start to finish, including issue identification, briefing, oral argument, and post-decision strategy
- Serve as embedded appellate counsel in trial-level proceedings, including:
- Attending trials and key hearings
- Advising trial teams on appellate strategy, issue preservation, and record development
- Assisting with or leading a briefing and argument on significant pretrial and trial motions
- Providing guidance on jury instructions, verdict forms, and post-trial motions
- Present oral argument in trial and appellate courts
- Take primary responsibility for matters, leading teams of lawyers and staff

Base Compensation: $180,000 – $210,000
