Description:

Kobre & Kim is seeking a lawyer to join its Legal Department in a hybrid role combining conflicts clearance with broader legal risk management, matter support and departmental initiatives. The successful candidate will help the firm make informed decisions on matter acceptance, support in-house lawyers on legal and ethical issues, and contribute to projects, guidance and training across the Legal Department. The role is intended for a lawyer who wants to build broader legal risk-management and advisory experience, using conflicts work as an important foundation.

Location: New York

Supervisor: Associate General Counsel

Primary Responsibilities:
Conflicts clearance
  • Assess and resolve potential conflicts identified in conflicts reports, handling straightforward issues independently and escalating more complex matters appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with partners, senior in-house lawyers and the Conflicts Team to support timely, practical and well-reasoned matter-acceptance decisions.
  • Help manage the conflicts clearance process efficiently, including coordinating the information and discussions needed to reach a resolution.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of the firm's conflicts processes, systems and related walls/information-barrier tools.

Around 20–35% of the role is expected to focus on conflicts clearance, with the balance offering exposure to a varied range of legal risk, matter support and Legal Department projects depending on the firm's needs.

Legal risk management and matter support
  • Support in-house lawyers on delegated, matter-specific assignments, including reviewing agreements and analysing emerging legal or ethical issues.
  • Research issues and prepare initial recommendations or proposed strategies to help mitigate legal, ethical and professional risk.
  • Prepare first drafts of training materials, guidance documents and internal policies relating to legal risk management.
  • Support Legal Department initiatives and larger-scale projects, including relevant AI-related initiatives.
  • Provide practical project management support to help move departmental assignments and initiatives forward.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctorate degree required.
  • U.S. qualified (New York preferred).
  • 1 - 4 years of post-admission experience gained in a law firm.
  • A litigation background is preferred.
  • Prior experience in conflicts or law firm risk management would be helpful but is not required.
  • Strong legal analysis, judgment and written communication skills.
  • A flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to respond to changing priorities and a varied workload.
  • A proactive, self-starting approach and an interest in seeking out additional assignments and learning opportunities.
  • Willingness to learn conflicts processes and technology from the ground up, including the foundational and process-driven aspects of the work.
  • Strong technological aptitude and a genuine interest in developing proficiency in the firm's systems, including the conflicts database, iManage, network drives, information-barrier tools and 3E, as well as exploring how AI tools can be used responsibly to improve processes and workflow efficiency.
  • A genuine interest in using conflicts work as a foundation for developing broader legal risk-management and advisory skills.
