About Brown & the Fellowship to Honor His Memory
Rick Brown 300x300The Richard L. Brown Children's Justice Fellowship is in honor of Richard ("Rick") L. Brown, founding faculty member at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who deeply believed in public service and the benefits of students providing supervised legal services in their local community. Brown, who passed away on July 5, 2013, was one of Boyd's finest faculty members and played a pivotal role in starting the school's community service program.

Professor Brown was the founding Director of the Wiener-Rogers Law Library from 1998 to 2002 and a founding senior faculty member from 1998 to 2008 at the William S. Boyd School of Law. He earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Indiana University in 1975, where he served as an Associate Editor of the Indiana Law Journal, and earned his M.L.L. in 1978 from the University of Washington. Brown served as the Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law at the Arizona State University College of Law for 15 years, during which time he oversaw the planning and construction of an architectural award-winning law library. Prior to joining the faculty at Arizona State University, he was an Assistant Law Librarian and Assistant Professor of Law at the Florida State University College of Law.

Fellowship Details
  • Application period: January 20 – February 22, 2026
  • Fellowship duration: 12 weeks (May – August 2026)
  • Stipend: $12,000

One law student from the William S. Boyd School of Law will be selected annually to receive the Richard L. Brown Children's Justice Fellowship. The selection committee is comprised of staff members of Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, a lawyer with the Children's Attorneys Project, and a member of Brown's family. The fellow is selected based on a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and learning to represent the stated interests of children.

The fellow will have the opportunity to experience a unique hands-on work environment, assisting attorneys with client engagement, trial preparation, legal research, preparation of motions and other court documents, and working on special projects. Additionally, the fellow will attend court proceedings and witness the unique challenges foster youth face in our child welfare court system. The fellow will have the opportunity to:
  • Receive judicial mentorship and/or observe court organized by the Eighth Judicial District Court;
  • Attend the annual conference of the National Association of Children's Counsel; and
  • Attend the annual Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada Pro Bono Awards Luncheon in December.

Upon conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow will participate as an ambassador in publicizing the availability of the fellowship during the following year and serve as a mentor to future fellows.
