Position Summary:
The Regulatory Research Attorney provides general legal support to the compliance department and is primarily responsible for the Compliance Edge Newsletter and managing the department's regulatory change management function. This position will prepare legal documents such as mortgages and promissory notes, and disclosures for consumer and non-consumer lending, including non-residential lending. The position serves as a subject matter expert for the organization for how loans should be made in consideration of applicable federal, state and local laws. In addition, the position may also include work outside of the United States and compliance with foreign laws (which may be learned on the job).

Essential Functions:
  • Responsible for advising the Chief Compliance officer of legal and/or regulatory changes applicable to operations and coordinating the management of changes throughout the organization and department.
  • Monitoring legislature and regulatory agency activity for legal and/or regulatory changes related to the mortgage lending industry.
  • Ticketing requests to the appropriate department personnel for legal and regulatory changes.
  • Providing guidance and written solutions for use by the Customer Service department in responding to customer inquiries related to compliance matters.
  • Providing guidance and training to the Compliance and Customer Service departments in relation to compliance matters.
  • Drafting documents to be used by An In-House Firm clients for mortgage lending.
  • Providing written articles for publication in An In-House Firm's Compliance Edge Newsletter reflecting legal and regulatory requirements for disclosures.
  • Testing compliance products published for customer use for accuracy, e.g., compliance matrices and disclosure matrices.
  • Completing review of various laws and/or regulations to support launches of new forms, products, or areas of business.
  • Providing oversight and guidance to internal department members for execution of legal

  • changes.
  • Willing to periodically travel for business needs.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bar admission preferred but not required
  • Five years' experience in the financial services industry
  • Five years of knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to mortgage lending activities, specifically knowledge of federal TILA, RESPA, FCRA and HPA requirements, state legal and regulatory requirements as well as investor guidelines, e.g., FNMA/FHLMC, FHA, VA, USDA
  • Must build strong working relationships with various personalities within An In-House Firm, including the ability to communicate well with people at all levels at An In-House Firm
  • Must work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and meet multiple and sometimes competing for deadlines
  • Superior analytical & research skills with the ability to synthesize information needed for preparing documents and disclosures and fielding questions from customers, customer service, etc.…
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills needed to effectively present information to employees and management as well as communicate with customers and publish articles
  • Experience working with Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of non-consumer mortgage lending desired
