The Position:

Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Law Clerk Differs from That of The Attorney Classification in That the Former Is Not Eligible or Has Not Been Admitted to The State Bar.
Note: Although Attorneys Licensed to Practice Law Will Not Be Excluded from Applying for This Position, This Is Not an Attorney Position. This Position Is for A Law Clerk Who Will Perform the Duties Outlined in This Job Announcement Which May Include Legal Research and Writing. the Candidate Selected for This Position Will Not Appear on The Record in Court.

Educational/bilingual Incentive
Incumbents May Be Eligible for An Educational Incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% Based on Completion of An Associate's, Bachelor's. or Master's Degree that Is Not Required for The Classification. Incumbents May Also Be Eligible for Bilingual Incentive Depending upon Operational Need and Certification of Skill.
The Eligible List Established from This Recruitment May Be Used to Fill Existing and Future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra Help Vacancies in The Public Defender's Office. There Is Currently One (1) Regular Vacancy.

Examples of Duties:
Duties May Include, but Are Not Limited to The Following:
- Receive and Address Client Inquiries, Both in And out Of Custody; Assess Clients' Needs and Take Appropriate Course of Action and Follow Through;
- Assist the Writs and Appeals Unit with Legal Research and Writing;
- Assist Attorneys with Various Case Related Requests Including Law and Motion Practice;
- Maintain Office Databases to Track and Memorialize Projects, Clients, Case Status, and Work Product;
- Assist with The Preparation and Filing of Legal Pleadings, Briefs, and Other Documents;
- Assist in Daily Spontaneous Issues Requiring Immediate Attention, Interface with Various in And out Of County Agencies when Necessary;
- Perform Related Duties as Assigned.
Typical Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience:
An Education and Experience Background Which Demonstrates Possession of The Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to Perform the Job. the Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Can Also Be Obtained by Completion of Paralegal Certificate Program or Completion of Two Years of Law School.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Must Possess and Maintain a Valid California Driver License as A Condition of Continued Employment.
- Experience with Legal Research and Writing.
Desired:
- Experience in The Criminal Defense Field Is Highly Desired.
- Experience Assisting Individuals from Underserved or Marginalized Backgrounds, Including Those Who Are Indigent or Experiencing Mental Health Challenges.
- Knowledge and Experience with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (cdcr) Records and Conferencing Protocols.
- Experience Managing Client Communications, Including Answering and Documenting Phone Calls, Drafting and Sending Responsive Correspondence Subject to Attorney Approval, and Coordinating with Attorney and Staff Concerning Deadlines.
- Experience Creating and Managing Complex Case Management Systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge Of:
- Legal Principles, Rules of Evidence, Legal Requirements, Their Applications and Court Proceedings;
- Legal Research Methods;
- Microsoft Office Programs and Other Related Data Software Products.
