Description:

Essential Functions:
  • Provide legal counsel and representation in the defense of those persons who have been judicially determined to be indigent and who have been formally charged with delinquent acts under Indiana law
  • Provide legal counsel when, in the Court's opinion, it is necessary to appoint an attorney to protect the rights of any person before the court
  • Provide legal counsel to children who have been removed by the Department of Child Services as a result of allegations of abuse or neglect under Indiana law
  • Perform any other functions the Senior Judge and the Court Executive may deem necessary to carry out the duties of the Lake Superior Court Juvenile Justice Complex

Knowledge/Skill:
The Public Defender must hold a Law Degree from an accredited law school and must have admission to practice law by the Supreme Court of the State of Indiana. Ideally, the Public Defender will have experience in the practice of defense of criminal and juvenile cases.

Qualified applicants will pass an NCIC check and drug screen.

Specific Skills Include:
  • Ability to communicate effectively by telephone, in writing and in person
  • Possess a demonstrated working knowledge of juvenile laws and procedures and Juvenile Code
  • Ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment
