This is an Independent Contract position.
A City in Spokane County, WA requests statement of qualifications from attorneys experienced in providing public defender services. Services will be provided beginning May 15, 2024. Although the duration of the contract may vary, the city prefers three-year contracts. Five years' experience in the field of public defense is preferred.

Scope of Work:
  • Provide legal representation to defendants facing misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor offenses
  • Represent indigent persons
  • Attend hearings in defense of clients as necessary
  • Prepare motions in defense of clients
  • Advise and consult with clients regarding alleged facts, legal implications, and collateral consequences of conviction
  • Perform trial work in defense of clients as necessary
  • Work cooperatively with the prosecutor and service providers while representing clients' stated interests
  • Adhere to the Rules of Professional Conduct in all aspects of client representation
  • Develop Written policies and procedures to implement a case weighting system in accordance with the Supreme Court Order
  • Attend court as schedule and provide for coverage during an absence

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possess a Juris Doctorate degree
  • License to practice law in the State of Washington
  • Be a graduate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
  • Be a member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association
  • Ability to certify compliance with Washington Supreme Court Standards for Indigent Defense, CrRLJ 3.1, including Standard 14.1.
