Description:

Cass County, Michigan, is seeking a qualified candidate to be appointed as the Prosecuting Attorney. The appointee will serve the remainder of the term through the 2028 general election.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: A Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school is required.

License: Evidence of consistent and continued good professional standing and authority to practice law in the State of Michigan required.

Experience: Significant experience in criminal law and trial practice preferred.

Residency: Must be a Cass County Resident or willing and able to become a Cass County Resident upon appointment.

General Scope of Duties
The Cass County Prosecutor is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Prosecutor's Office and ensuring the timely handling and resolution of its caseload. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Prosecuting felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile delinquency cases;
  • Handling related criminal and certain civil proceedings;
  • Handling appeals;
  • Providing legal counsel to local law enforcement agencies;
  • Representing the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in abuse and neglect proceedings;
  • Establishing paternity and child support;
  • Ensuring compliance with grants awarded to the office;
  • Managing the office and budget; and
  • Supervising and training office staff.
