Tulane University School of Law invites applications for a full-time faculty position as Professor of the Practice of Law, serving as the Director of Academic Success. This appointment will be made under the Law School's Professor of the Practice track, with an initial contract of three to five years, renewable pursuant to University and Law School standards.

The Director of Academic Success plays a vital role in supporting student achievement throughout law school and into the legal profession. Tulane is a national law school, with approximately one-third of our students taking the Louisiana bar centering civil law subjects, and two-thirds taking the bar exam in common law jurisdictions. The Director will teach a minimum of two courses annually—one each semester—initially focused on preparing students in their final year for the civil law bar exam and the common law bar exam, respectively. These courses will supplement commercial bar preparation programs and provide targeted instruction on legal analysis, essay writing, multiple-choice strategies, and jurisdiction-specific content.

In addition to teaching, the Director will lead academic support programming, provide individualized academic coaching, and collaborate with faculty and administrative leaders to develop programming that supports student success across a range of backgrounds and experiences.

This position will include supervisory responsibilities and works closely with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, and other student-facing leaders.
  • Teach two bar preparation courses annually (civil law and common law jurisdictions).
  • Lead and manage the Academic Support Program, including orientation and 1L/2L programming.
  • Provide individualized academic coaching, advising, and support for students and recent graduates.
  • Conduct outreach to students at risk of failing the bar exam and provide targeted support to repeat takers.
  • Develop programming and communications to educate students about bar requirements, application processes, and course selection.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to support student success.
  • Analyze and report on the effectiveness of academic success and bar support programs.
  • Assist the Office of Academic Services and Office of Career Development in obtaining student and alumni data relating to bar admissions.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school with a strong academic record.
  • Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in legal practice, equivalent legal activity, or academic teaching.
  • Evidence of outstanding promise as a teacher.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, writing, and editing skills.

Preferred:
  • Five or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with bar exam preparation and curricular programming.
  • Experience working with student populations across a range of academic and professional goals.

Appointment Standards: This position is governed by Tulane University's standards for Professors of the Practice of Law, including:
  • Initial appointment of 3–5 years, renewable based on performance and funding.
  • Eligibility for longer-term contracts upon renewal.
  • Evaluation and appointment by the Professor of the Practice Appointments Committee, with full faculty participation.
