Your primary responsibility is to address all IP needs of the business related to A Software Company Video and Media Compression team, including working closely with inventors to evaluate, draft, file, and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO and foreign counterparts. Depending on skills and experience, the applicant may be considered for a role as Senior Patent Attorney or Senior Patent Agent.

The Patent Attorney/Agent will report to the IP Director for Video Compression at our offices in Reston, Virginia. The Patent Attorney/Agent's primary responsibility is to draft and prosecute patent applications, including patents for standardized technologies in the media coding technologies such as point-cloud coding, 3D mesh coding, and video compression.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Working closely with A Software Company Video Compression team inventors in the drafting and prosecution of patents before the USPTO and foreign counterparts
  • Advising overseas attorneys on applications for foreign patent applications
  • Managing A Software Company Video Compression patent portfolio
  • Creating presentations and reports of patent matters and patent portfolios
  • Reviewing patent applications
  • Assisting with drafting of specifications, figures, and claims
  • Assisting with filings and payments of fees
  • Searching prior art for relevant subject matter
  • Helping to prepare client presentations
  • Other tasks as assigned

  • Licensed to practice before a State Bar (Virginia preferred) and the USPTO
  • Experience with media compression technologies such as point-cloud coding, 3D mesh coding, or video compression
  • Familiarity with Video Compression standards (e.g., MPEG standards) is a plus
  • 3+ years of experience drafting and prosecuting patents, managing portfolios, performing patent analysis, and developing patent strategies
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
