The Patent Agent (Organic Chemistry) will work under the supervision of partners and associates in the prosecution and strategic management of patent portfolios for clients in the life sciences industry related to in small molecule drug discovery and development. The ideal candidate will leverage advanced scientific expertise to provide technical insight in support of patent drafting, prosecution, and portfolio counseling relating to sophisticated matters for clients ranging from early-stage startups to global life sciences and pharmaceutical companies. This is not a remote/hybrid position. Responsibilities include:
- Drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications in organic chemistry and related disciplines.
- Conducting freedom-to-operate, validity, and patentability analyses.
- Assisting in IP due diligence, portfolio management, and strategic counseling for emerging and established pharmaceutical company clients.
- Collaborating with attorneys to provide scientific expertise in support of litigation, licensing, and other IP-related matters.
- Maintaining current knowledge of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent practices, procedures, and developments relevant to life sciences technologies.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in organic chemistry, synthetic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related field (required). Highly qualified candidates with a M.S. and several years of industry research experience may be considered.
- Must be registered to practice before the USPTO with a valid registration number and in good standing (required).
- Strong background in organic or medicinal chemistry, with demonstrated expertise in synthetic methodologies, drug design, or small molecule development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear legal documents.
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior law firm or in-house patent prosecution experience in the chemistry/pharma space is strongly preferred, but exceptional candidates transitioning from academia or research settings will be considered.
- Team-oriented, detail-focused, and committed to providing high-quality client service.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and superior academic background.
- Desire for significant responsibility and client interaction.
Expected Salary Range (BOS, CA and NYC): $150,000 - $250,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
