About This Role:
Patent Agent will be responsible for drafting and prosecuting US patent applications, conducting patent searches and analysis, and interacting directly with inventors and outside counsel, for the various business units within Carrier.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the areas of HVAC, Refrigeration, Fire Systems, and/or Security Systems, as well as overseeing the preparation of documentation necessary to file patent applications in the USPTO, PCT, and foreign patent offices.
  • Oversee the docketing of the office actions and correspondence received from and sent to the USPTO, PCT, and foreign patent offices.
  • Direct responsibility for all aspects of the US prosecution of patents drafted in-house and by outside counsel in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Correspond with patent search vendors for patentability, invalidity, and freedom-to-operate searches, review the results of such searches, and provide analysis.
  • Support competitive intelligence and IP monitoring programs
  • Assist the IP staff on specific projects, as needed.
  • Learning and implementing current intellectual property department tools and processes and working willingly with members of the Intellectual Property Department with the goal of continuous improvement of department processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, computer) or Physics
  • USPTO bar/registration to practice is required.
  • 5 + years of full-time experience doing claim drafting and hands-on patent prosecution experience with a reputable law firm and/or in-house focused on electrical or computer software-related applications with the ability to handle mechanical and electromechanical technologies as well.
  • 5 + years of experience and working knowledge of USPTO and foreign patent filing practices and procedures are required.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Prior engineering experience is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills and follow-up skills are required, as well as the ability to prioritize needs and work independently.
  • Proven ability to work independently and efficiently without substantial oversight and deliver high-quality and strategic work products.
