Description:

Buchanan's growing AI practice team seeks a highly motivated and experienced Patent Agent with electrical engineering/computer science expertise. A minimum of two years or equivalent Patent Agent experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications is preferred, particularly in technology areas that include one or more of computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, network architecture, mobile communications and cloud computing. Former (USPTO) Patent Examiner experience is welcomed as a possible equivalent experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications, including drafting claims, specifications and responses to office actions in software-related technologies.
  • Prepare for and conduct USPTO Examiner interviews.
  • Review prior art searches and analyze patentability of inventions.
  • Collaborate with inventors to provide strategic advice on patent portfolio development.
  • Demonstrate interest in staying abreast of patent law developments and in technology trends regarding computer science and electrical engineering.
  • Participate in client meetings and presentations, effectively communicating on complex technical concepts.

Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, Software/Computer Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering with software emphasis (advanced technical degrees are a plus).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Network Management, Mobile Communications, Cloud Computing and/or related technologies.
  • 2+ years or equivalent experience as a Patent Agent on work related to drafting/prosecuting patent applications relating to computer science/engineering, in technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and large language models is preferred.
  • Candidates who would fall under technical specialist and work to obtain a Patent Agent registration are welcomed to apply.

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

This position can be based out of our Washington, DC, King of Prussia, Philadelphia or Pittsburgh Offices.

Salary Range:
Minimum Salary of $120,000
