Representative Duties
This vacancy is for a part-time court law clerk to United States District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell and United States District Judge John L. Badalamenti. The court law clerk works for both judges to research issues of law, draft proposed orders, serve as a legal advisor, attend court proceedings, and perform other assigned duties.

The caseload in the jurisdiction is heavy, and the types of cases presented are varied, often involving novel issues of law. So qualified candidates must be capable of producing exceptional work under demanding time constraints. A substantial portion of the work assignments for this position is to assist Judges Chappell and Badalamenti in drafting orders in federal civil cases, e.g., motions to dismiss in, among other substantive areas, insurance coverages cases.

Although the nature of the matters presented is serious, the work environment is personable. There is regular interaction with the Judges, law clerks, and other staff concerning legal and court-related issues.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
At the time of appointment, the applicant must be a law school graduate ranked within the top twenty percent of the class. Bar membership is preferred, and at least one year of post-graduate experience in litigation is preferred.

Participation in law review, moot court, or trial team is preferred. Good character, maturity, and humility are required. The applicant must also possess excellent research, writing, analytical, proofreading, organizational, communication, and word-processing skills.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the United States. The selected candidate will be subject to a background check as a condition of employment.
