Description:
Make a Difference in Vermont CommunitiesJoin an established legal team dedicated to serving the people and places that make Vermont special. SP&F Attorneys, P.C. is seeking an experienced attorney to become an integral part of our practice supporting municipalities and school districts throughout the state.
What We're Looking For:
Experience & Credentials:
- 10+ years of legal experience
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Admission to the Vermont State Bar (or ability to gain admission)
- While experience in municipal law, education law, or government practice is helpful, it is not a requirement. Most legal backgrounds will translate to effective law practice in these areas
- Strong legal research and writing abilities
- Excellent communication skills—you'll be explaining complex legal issues to clients who aren't lawyers
- Desire to advise clients proactively with keen attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple matters independently while meeting deadlines
- Collaborative mindset and genuine interest in public service
For 35 years, SP&F has been Vermont's trusted legal partner for local governments. We're known for providing comprehensive, timely, and cost-effective legal services that help communities thrive. Our attorneys build strong, long-term relationships with town managers and administrators, selectboards, school superintendents, school boards, and nonprofit leaders—anticipating issues and providing practical guidance that keep our clients' projects and matters moving forward.
We're strongly committed to Vermont's people, values, and places. When you join SP&F, you're not just practicing law—you're helping shape the future of Vermont communities.
What You'll Do:
Your work will be as varied as Vermont itself. One week the firm might be:
- Guiding a selectboard through complex zoning and land use matters
- Reviewing a grant agreement for the development of affordable housing
- Assisting a fire chief to navigate a difficult personnel issue
- Representing a school district in an administrative hearing related to special education matters
- Negotiating a collective bargaining agreement with a highway worker union
- Drafting a policy regarding the display of signage on town property
- Assisting a school superintendent in navigating First Amendment issues
- Representing a municipality in court in relation to a construction project
What we offer:

- Collegial, down-to-earth atmosphere with a supportive team
- Hybrid or fully remote work considered
- Focus on quality service and work-life balance
Compensation & Benefits:
Competitive salary ($95,000 and up, commensurate with experience) with generous benefits, including an employer-funded retirement plan with no employee match
