About the Position:
We are seeking experienced and strategic Managing Research Attorneys to lead the Court's Research Attorney and Law Clerk Unit. This position provides overall direction and oversight of staff, programs, and operations to ensure judicial officers receive timely, high-quality legal research and analysis. The Managing Research Attorneys manage the performance of Supervising Research Attorneys, and the Research Attorneys and Law Clerks to ensure they are efficient, effective and responsive in meeting judicial needs for well-reasoned and timely legal research. Managing Research Attorneys are also responsible for helping set the strategic direction of the Unit. This role also focuses on developing and supporting a high-performing, service-oriented team while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, court rules, and policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and oversee the administrative and operational functions of the Research Attorney and Law Clerk Unit, including budgeting and resource allocation.
- Manage, coach, and evaluate supervising research attorneys, research attorneys, and law clerks to ensure effective and responsive service delivery.
- Develop and implement unit goals, policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives aligned with Court objectives.
- Serve as a key advisor to Court leadership and judicial officers on operational, legal research, and staffing issues.
- Oversee recruitment, training, and employee relations, including participation in labor and policy discussions.

This is an at-will managerial position. The Trial Court Employment Protection and Governance Act (SB 2140) authorizes the Court to exclude managerial employees from the employment protection provisions of the Act subject to meet and confer.

Selection Requirements
To Qualify, You Must Meet One of The Following Options at The Final Filing Date of This Bulletin:
Option I: Graduation from An Accredited School of Law with A Juris Doctor*, Active License to Practice Law in The State of California, Active Member in Good Standing of The State Bar of California – and – Two (2) Years of Experience Supervising the Activities and Administrative Functions of Assigned Research Attorneys and Law Clerks at The Level of Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles Supervising Research Attorney.
Option Ii: Graduation from An Accredited School of Law with A Juris Doctor*, Active License to Practice Law in The State of California, Active Member in Good Standing of The State Bar of California with Five (5) Years of Experience, of Which Also Includes at Least Three (3) Years of Demonstrated Management Experience Overseeing the Activities of A Legal Professional Staff of Attorneys.

Note: Credit for Experience Is Given Based on A 40-Hour Workweek. Part-Time Experience Is Credited on A Part-Time Ratio (e.G., Working 20 Hours per Week for Two Months Equals One Month of Experience). Overtime Does Not Count Toward Additional Credit.

- Extensive Experience in Legal Research and Analysis Including, but Not Limited To, Civil, Criminal, Family, Juvenile, and Probate Law.
- Demonstrated Leadership and Management Experience Within a Court, Public Sector, or Complex Legal Organization.
- Strong Knowledge of Court Operations, Applicable Laws, Rules of Court, and Public Administration Practices.
- Proven Ability to Manage Budgets, Programs, and Staff Performance in A Highly Professional Environment.
- Excellent Communication, Judgment, and Interpersonal Skills, with The Ability to Handle Sensitive and Confidential Matters.
