Since 1983, San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, Inc. (SDVLP), the county's oldest and most comprehensive pro bono legal services program, has changed the lives of thousands of indigent and other disadvantaged people, by providing equal access to the justice system. SDVLP's unique service model serves as a bridge between indigent and other disadvantaged people in San Diego County and the volunteer lawyers and others who are willing to donate their time and resources.

About the Position:
The Managing Attorney for San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP) is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the organization's day-to-day operations and strengthening organizational infrastructure. This position also supervises SDVLP's highly successful Microbusiness and Nonprofit Support Program, which leverages pro bono attorneys to provide vital free legal services to low-income entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations.

The Managing Attorney partners closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the senior leadership team to shape the organization's vision, manage staff and resources, and uphold the organization's mission and values. This role combines high-level legal management with organizational leadership to ensure SDVLP delivers exceptional legal advocacy while operating efficiently and sustainably.

As part of the senior leadership team, this position will report to the Chief Executive Officer, and will directly supervise the Operations Manager, Human Resources Coordinator, and Staff Attorney for SDVLP's Microbusiness and Nonprofit Support Program.

Essential Job Duties:
The Managing Attorney will be responsible for:
  • Partnering with the CEO to develop and maintain operational policies, workflows, and accountability structures that advance efficiency and equity.
  • Overseeing administrative operations including facilities, procurement, IT, and technology systems.
  • Partnering with the CEO and finance staff to manage organizational budgets, financial planning, and resource allocation.
  • Ensuring strong internal controls, compliance with funder requirements, and organizational risk management.
  • Partnering with program staff to ensure that legal service delivery is adequately resourced, supported, and measured.
  • Maintaining oversight of case management systems and quality control, including supervising the collection and analysis of program and client data, the development and application of quality control/evaluation tools, and the use of technology to improve data collection and delivery of services.
  • Supporting grant writing and fundraising efforts by providing necessary program data.
  • Collaborating with program and finance staff to draft and oversee contracts with grantors, subcontractors and vendors.
  • Overseeing HR policies and practices including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and professional development.
  • Supervising SDVLP's Microbusiness and Nonprofit Support Program to ensure the delivery of high-quality, pro bono legal services to low-income entrepreneurs, microbusinesses, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Engaging in other tasks and projects as needed to further SDVLP's mission.

Work Environment:
This is a full-time position requiring the ability to work in SDVLP's San Diego downtown office 5 days per week: minimum 37.50-hour work week.

Salary & Benefits:
  • Salary range is $110,000- $120,000, DOE.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance –100% of the premium for employee medical insurance is paid in full by the employer – eligibility for health care coverage is the 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.

Qualifications:
Qualifications:
  • Member in good standing of the California Bar.
  • Minimum of seven years as a practicing attorney, with at least 3 years in business transactional law;.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven success strengthening organizational systems and creating structure in growing or complex environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to successfully work as part of a team, and with the public, volunteers, court personnel, government agencies, and partner organizations.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with accuracy and minimal direction.
  • Excellent Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income and disadvantaged people.
