Position Overview:
The City of Westfield is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legal Intern to join our Legal Department for the summer term. This internship will take place May 2026-Aug.2026. This position offers a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience in municipal law, legal research, and ordinance development. The intern will collaborate with the City Attorney and staff to conduct legal research and review and draft legal documents. The intern will assist with a variety of projects, including researching statutes and reviewing and revising ordinances relating to Westfield's transition from a Third Class City to a Second Class City.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and recommend revisions to City ordinances related to Westfield's transition from a Third Class to a Second Class City.
  • Review existing ordinances to identify areas for clarification, modernization, or improvement.
  • Prepare draft revisions and summaries for review by the City Attorney.
  • Utilize legal research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis to support findings and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with staff on projects while also completing independent assignments.
  • Assist in preparing materials for meetings and may have opportunities to attend legal or city-related events and training.
  • Complete other projects as assigned.

Typical Qualifications:
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in law school (1L or 2L).
  • Strong research and writing skills with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Westlaw or LexisNexis is required.
  • General understanding of legal research and local government.
  • Prior experience with municipal law and ordinance review preferred but not required.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
