Purpose of Job:South Dakota Trust Company's business is designed to accommodate high-net worth clients, both domestically and internationally, by providing “flexible, cost-effective, service-oriented trust administration” in the #1 rated domestic trust jurisdiction. SDTC's core focus is to serve families' individual goals, while preserving family wealth in perpetuity.
We are seeking a Legal Counsel to directly support SDTC's General Counsel on a broad range of corporate legal matters involving SDTC and its affiliates. The successful candidate will have a critical role in supporting the company's legal functions across core business activities and in overseeing litigation matters.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
- Legal Counsel: Support General Counsel and internal teams on a wide range of trust and fiduciary matters.
- Litigation: Assist in the overseeing of litigation matters involving the company, including dispute resolution.
- Situs and Regulation: Be an industry expert in situs, and trust law, regulation and tax by staying abreast of relevant state, federal and international laws and regulations affecting the trust industry.
- Contract Review: Assist in the review of contracts, third-party agreements, and other legal documents.
- Risk Management: Provide support to the General Counsel on identifying legal risks and in providing strategic advice to mitigate potential issues.
- Client Strategies: Assist the client strategy team with technical expertise and support as it relates to the core business model (situs), and assist as needed in developing effective strategies that are industry best practices.
- Collaboration: Work closely and support cross-functional teams including management, administration, finance, operations, client strategy and compliance, to address legal aspects of business operations.
Essential Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to the bar and in good standing.
- Minimum of 3-8+ years of relevant legal experience with a strong background in civil litigation OR experience in estate planning, trust administration, and tax-related matters.
- Trust situs experience is a plus.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
