3+ years of in-house or non-profit experience preferred. Experience managing real estate transactions required. Experience with religious or other 501(c)(3) organizations, general domestic and international corporate operations desired.

Summary of Position:
Legal counsel position is responsible for and/or collaborates on the following functional areas for the global church: real estate transactions and related matters; international legal matters; litigation; charitable status and tax issues; creation and management of legal resources available to various jurisdictions of the church. Eligible for hybrid work schedule.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides legal support to local and regional leaders and staff related to local jurisdictional real estate purchase and sale transactions.
  • Advises leaders and staff on local jurisdictional real estate matters, such as easements, leases, access agreements and disputes.
  • Supports the U.S. field, in collaboration with OGC team, by developing and updating legal resources, checklists, and guides for use by leaders and staff.
  • Manages outside counsel on litigation matters, as assigned.
  • Consults on international legal matters, as assigned.
  • Advises church leadership and local jurisdictional leaders on IRS compliance, charitable status, and general tax issues, as assigned.
  • Collaborates with OGC team to provide counsel on data protection and privacy policies and compliance, as assigned.
  • Collaborates with OGC team on digitization of OGC files and document retention policies.
  • Handles administrative and technical tasks related to their legal assignments.

Required Trainings
Registered Youth Worker/Anti-harassment Training: New employees are required to be a registered youth worker with Community of Christ or be able to register within 30 days of hire date. Anti-harassment training is also required within 30 days of hire and then required annually.
