Job Description:SquareTrade is seeking a collaborative, energetic legal counsel who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is excited about gaining broad exposure to diverse legal matters. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with business partners across the organization, providing practical, business-focused legal advice while helping shape scalable processes for a growing global enterprise.
You'll be embedded with teams throughout the company, advising on legal risks, business strategies, and issues central to our operations such as commercial contracts, employment, litigation, data privacy, corporate governance, and marketing. Expect to partner closely with internal stakeholders—Business Development, Supply Chain, HR, Marketing, Finance & Accounting, and IT & Engineering—as well as interface with senior management and legal teams at major retailers and carriers. Your goal: reduce friction, improve transaction flow, and enhance customer experience.
You'll join a small but mighty team of experienced lawyers who value collaboration, creativity, and having fun while delivering exceptional results. You'll work in the office at least two days each week to ensure meaningful time spent collaborating and solving problems side by side as a team and with our stakeholders.
Responsibilities include:
- Draft, review, and manage a wide range of legal agreements, including NDAs, supply chain/sourcing deals, and eventually, retailer partnerships.
- Provide legal support on employment law, litigation, consumer arbitration, privacy and data security, corporate governance, marketing, trademarks, and other legal matters.
- Monitor legislative developments and ensure compliance; develop internal policies to meet regulatory requirements, including as they related to AI governance.
- Provide legal support and guidance on the management of customer regulatory complaint, including coordination of investigations and dispute resolution.
- Identify and implement solutions to complex issues, taking prudent risks aligned with business objectives.
- Work independently, initiate new projects, and continuously improve processes and operations.
- Deliver timely, pragmatic legal counsel—even in ambiguous situations.
- Exercise sound judgment in all matters.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues across multiple locations, ensuring alignment and productivity despite a dispersed team.
Qualifications:
- JD from an accredited law school and active California bar membership in good standing
- 3+ years of relevant legal experience; in-house experience preferred but not required
- Experience with commercial contracts, employment law, litigation, data privacy, and/or cyber security
- Exceptional judgment and creativity, with a proven ability to operate independently with minimal direction, manage competing priorities, and excel in fast-paced, results-oriented environments
- Ability to navigate ambiguity with a creative, solutions‑focused approach to complex legal challenges
- Strong cross‑functional communication and stakeholder‑management skills
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage concurrent projects

SquareTrade estimates the possible base compensation for this role, if hired in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, to be in the range : $100K - $150K
