About the role:
As a Legal Counsel, you'll play a critical role in supporting the legal development and delivery of a global portfolio of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage projects. These projects remove carbon dioxide whilst delivering reliable, renewable electricity, and will make a key contribution to the US's goal to achieve a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.

Supporting the development of A Sustainable Bioenergy Company's ambition to be a global leader in the field of carbon dioxide removals or “negative emissions”, you'll work closely with an international team, developing pioneering options for carbon dioxide removal projects, from the initial feasibility stage through to development and subsequent commissioning of identified projects.

You'll be part of a dynamic and diverse organisation that aims to set the standard for the development of high-quality carbon removals projects and provide high-quality legal advice, balancing risk identification and mitigation and with commercial awareness in this setting. You will also need to lead drafting, review, negotiation and execution of contracts (which will range in value, complexity and strategic importance) and identify any material and contractual risks for escalation and resolution.

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, this role would be based out of A Sustainable Bioenergy Company office in Houston, Texas. The role may require occasional travel across the US.

About You:
  • Applicants should be licensed in Texas, with minimum 2 years of post-qualification experience in the field above, having practiced in the state of Texas. Applicants licensed in neighbouring states, in addition to Texas, is an advantage.
  • As an ideal candidate you'll have experience working on energy projects and/or commodities markets, ideally with an interesting in the development of carbon markets and the sale of carbon dioxide removal credits or similar instruments. .
  • You'll have the ability to provide clear and accurate legal advice. You'll have excellent technical, analytical and drafting skills, and strong negotiating skills. You'll have a pragmatic approach and an ability to assess and quantify commercial risk.
  • You will be energised at the prospect of working in developing areas of the law and capable of working on a variety of matters in a multi-disciplinary environment.
