Cornell Law School seeks a full-time (12-month) Lecturer and Assistant Director of Academic Support to collaborate with the Director of Academic Support in facilitating law student academic achievement and bar exam readiness. The incumbent will counsel students on analytical and exam skills, time management, exam-writing and bar-taking strategies, and assist with other student skills development programs. They will also develop and teach a 3L bar-readiness course each spring.

Responsibilities include the following:
  • Teach the bar-readiness course each spring for 3Ls, focusing on bar strategies and exam-writing. The initial teaching load will be one section, but additional sections may be added based on experience and student demand.
  • Monitor, teach, and coach JD students, prioritizing students on academic watch/intervention. Provide individual feedback and instruction on general study skills, exam skills, and time management, both during the academic year and the winter and summer bar review periods. This includes monitoring student data and progress to determine best methods for optimal outcomes in law school and on the bar exam.
  • Develop resources to support Academic Support's engagement with students, including workshops, presentations, and other resources, like Canvas.
  • Stay current on best practices and scholarship regarding academic support and bar preparation, particularly on challenges in preparing our students for the NextGen bar exam.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Academic Support, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dean of Students, Senior Associate Dean for Enrollment and Student Services, Associate Dean for Career Development, and other student-facing offices to assure best student outcomes.
  • Help supervise the student Peer Advisors and tutors.
  • Engage with regional and national academic support and legal education communities.

This appointment is for a three-year term and is benefits eligible. Reappointment will be based on successful performance, funding, and available work.

The position is based in Ithaca, NY. While some duties can be performed off campus, the successful applicant will need to be available on campus during normal business hours to fulfill many job responsibilities, particularly student-facing interactions during the academic year.

Qualifications:
  • JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Bar membership in a US jurisdiction (may be inactive).
  • Minimum three years' relevant academic support and teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding law student learning strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly regarding student coaching and counseling.
  • Experience in designing and implementing bar exam review classes and materials.
  • Experience working with at-risk students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced law school environment.
