Job Description:
Interns will work closely with Assistant U.S. Attorneys on criminal, civil, and appellate matters. Law students perform legal research, draft memoranda, observe court proceedings, and generally assist in litigation and trials. Typical assignments will include assisting with all facets of case preparation including researching legal issues, drafting/writing motions and responses and various pleadings, providing trial support to Assistant United States Attorneys, interviewing witnesses, assembling exhibits for trial, and possibly appearing in court under the supervision of an Assistant United States Attorney.

Work will be performed in-person at one of the following offices within our district:
  • Cheyenne, WY – Criminal and Civil cases
  • Casper, WY – Criminal and Appellate cases
  • Yellowstone National Park – High volume of Petty and Criminal Misdemeanor Offenses

Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be a rising second-year or third-year law student
  • Summer Hours: Full-Time. Must be able to commit to a minimum of 35 hours per week for 8 to 10 continuous weeks.
  • Placement is conditioned upon a successful background check to include fingerprints, credit and tax checks, and a drug test. Placement cannot commence until cleared. Common issues that may arise are as follows:
  • Citizenship: Students must be U.S. citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States (natives of American Samoa).
  • Drug Use: Any type of illegal drug use will require a written explanation describing the events surrounding the drug use.
  • Credit History: All outstanding credit problems must be resolved before work can begin. A history of serious credit problems may be grounds for disqualification.
  • Employment History: Students must submit a written explanation if they have been fired from a previous job, quit after having been told that they would be fired, or left a job by mutual agreement because of specific problems.
  • Criminal History: Students must submit a written explanation if they have been charged, convicted, imprisoned, or been on probation or parole for any offense.

Salary:
These positions are uncompensated. Law students interested in volunteering are invited to apply. Work-study credit possible.

Relocation Expenses
No relocation expenses will be authorized. For internships in Yellowstone National Park, the Park Service might have housing available in the park at a discounted rate.
