About the Office:The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California represents the Federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the Eastern District of California. This includes all criminal prosecutions for violations of Federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers.
The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California is headquartered in Sacramento. The District includes the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains and encompasses most of the land mass of California - from the Coastal Mountain Range to the Nevada border, and from Bakersfield in the south to the Oregon border.
The Fresno Office serves the counties of Calaveras, Tuolumne, Stanislaus, Mariposa, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Inyo, and Kern. Fresno is one of the fastest growing cities in California, due in part to its central location to major tourist areas in California. Fresno is located in the middle of the fertile San Joaquin Valley, also known as the Central Valley, which is a major supplier of food and agricultural products for the United States and the world. This area also includes national treasures such as Yosemite National Park and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks.
Job Description:
Interns will be assigned to the Criminal Division. Every intern will work under the guidance of an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in conjunction with pending cases. Assignments will include legal research, drafting pleadings and responses and appellate briefs. Interns will also assist the AUSA in preparing for all phases of criminal prosecution: including discovery, depositions, pretrial hearings, trials, and sentencing hearings. The district will host informative lunch sessions which will include presentations from the AUSAs, the judiciary, and federal agents, as available. The goal of our district's intern program is to introduce them to the federal legal system, develop their legal skills and, above all, to provide a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
The Summer Intern program generally lasts for 10 continuous weeks with an expectation to work 40 hours a week during normal business hours.
Qualifications:
To be eligible for this internship ALL of the following requirements must be met:
- Law Student Status: Acceptance of applications for this announcement will be limited to first-year (second semester) and second-year law students. Law school graduates are not eligible for law student volunteer positions. An eligible student is an individual who is enrolled in law school pursuing a Juris Doctor Degree and is taking at least half-time academic course load in an accredited university. Successful candidates must have outstanding academic records, superior writing skills, and be in good academic standing at his/her university.
- Citizenship: Student Interns must be United States citizens.
- Background Investigation: You must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- Volunteer Agreement: All interns are required to sign the Participant Agreement.
