Job Description:Externs will work closely with Assistant U.S. Attorneys on criminal, civil, and appellate matters. Externs may perform legal research in a variety of areas, including tort and contract law, fraud investigations, medical malpractice, immigration law, the federal sentencing guidelines, and substantive criminal law and procedure. In addition to conducting legal research, externs are routinely called upon to draft research memoranda, legal pleadings, and trial briefs. They may also play an integral role in responding to habeas corpus and other prisoner petitions. Students will also have ample opportunities to observe federal court proceedings and may have the opportunity to visit federal partners within the District.
Minimum Weeks Required: 14 weeks; 16 hours per week; on-site in Louisville.
Qualifications:
Must be a rising second or third-year law students enrolled at least half-time at an accredited institution. Must be a U.S. citizen. Joint-degree candidates may also apply. A comprehensive, in-depth background investigation is required due to the sensitive nature of the work performed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. All offers to candidates are conditioned upon the successful completion of a required background check which requires disclosure of any drug use, law enforcement and employment records, and financial credit information. Outside legal employment is not permitted.
