The 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office is committed to seeking and pursuing justice on behalf of victims of crime through the fair and ethical prosecution of those who commit offenses in our community. With a focus on education, treatment, and a reduction in recidivism, the District Attorney's Office will also work vigorously to reform the criminal justice system to better serve those who live and work in Adams and Broomfield Counties.

Joining our Student Practice Act (SPA) Internship program is the first step towards a career as a prosecutor with the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office. Our program offers great experience to grow your skills. We pride ourselves in our dedication to training and preparing Student Practice Act Interns for their future service to the community.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office is accepting applications for Students Eligible under Student Practice Act, Colorado Rule of Admissions 205.7(2)(b), duly enrolled in an ABA accredited law school and have completed two years of legal studies.

Examples of Duties for Success:
The following essential job functions and examples of duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive; positions assigned to this class may not perform all of the duties listed.

Under the supervision of licensed deputy district attorneys, interns handle a docket of traffic and misdemeanor cases. This includes initial and ongoing case review, follow-up with law enforcement agencies, negotiations with defense counsel, meeting with witnesses and victims, and conducting motions hearings and jury trials.

Legal Interns spend a considerable amount of time in court working cases. This includes taking cases to trial, under the supervision of a deputy district attorney, and seeking to prove a case to a jury. Trials consist of jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross examination of witnesses, and closing arguments. Interns are expected to demonstrate appropriate demeanor and professionalism in court.

Legal Interns research and respond to a wide variety of defense motions, including motions for the suppression of evidence. This also involves preparing motions on behalf of the DA's Office.

The Intern program will run June 1, 2027 - August 6, 2027, and require at least 3 days onsite - Wednesdays are mandatory.
Interns are capped at 29 hours per week during this time.

Qualifications for Success:
Education: Candidates are required to be in law school and to have completed two years of study and must be qualified to practice under the student practice act prior to starting the 3L Student Practice Act Internship. See C.R.C.P. Rule 205.7.

More Qualifications for Success:
  • Ability to advocate legal and factual scenarios in a clear and persuasive manner to co-workers, judges and jurors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, defense attorneys, pro se defendants, victims, witnesses, judges, court staff, law enforcement and related agencies' personnel, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with same.

Student Practice Internship Applicants must successfully pass a background.
